7-Step Verification Checklist
Do all of these before paying:
- ✓Step 1: Look up the property on the County Appraisal District website (collincad.org for Collin County, dallascad.org for Dallas County). Check the owner name.
- ✓Step 2: Ask the landlord for a copy of their driver's license + proof of ownership (deed or property tax statement)
- ✓Step 3: Search the Texas Secretary of State website for the management company name (if applicable)
- ✓Step 4: Google the landlord's name + phone number - look for other listings or complaints
- ✓Step 5: Check online reviews of the landlord/management company on Google, Yelp, and the BBB
- ✓Step 6: Insist on meeting at the property and getting keys before any payment
- ✓Step 7: Pay by check or portal - never wire, Zelle, or Cash App to an individual for a deposit
