5 Red Flags on a Zillow Rental
Watch for these:
- ✓Price 20-40% below comparable rentals in the same ZIP code
- ✓Landlord claims to be "out of town" and can't show the property in person
- ✓Requests wire transfer, Zelle, or Cash App for deposit (legitimate landlords use checks or portal payments)
- ✓Listing photos are stock images or don't match the Google Street View of the address
- ✓Lease terms are suspiciously flexible ("move in today, no credit check")
How to Verify in 5 Minutes
Before sending any money:
- ✓Check county appraisal district (collincad.org, dallascad.org) - does the owner name match?
- ✓Google the address + "for rent" - is it listed on multiple sites with the same contact?
- ✓Use TruReport's TruVerified scam detector - cross-references county records + HUD fair market rents + price anomaly detection
- ✓Ask for a video walkthrough or in-person showing. No legitimate landlord refuses.
