How to View a House Remotely - 7 Steps

You don't have to fly to Texas to do real research on a house. The 7 steps below replace three separate websites (Zillow, county records, FEMA) with one checklist you can finish in about 30 minutes per house.

Researched by the TruReport editorial team · Updated 2026-07-31 · Editorial standards

Step 1 - Put the address into one place

Type the address into RemotePropView. The property page pulls in the Street View photo, the county owner records, what the listing says vs. what the county actually has on file, and our Trust Score - all on one page. You don't have to keep flipping between four browser tabs to find out what's true.

Step 2 - Check the county records against the listing

Listings get things wrong all the time - wrong bedroom count, wrong year built, wrong square footage, wrong lot size. Look at the county record next to the listing and compare them. If the numbers don't match, that's either an old listing the agent forgot to update, or someone is stretching the truth. Either way, our Trust Score drops to flag it.

Step 3 - Look at the flood map

A flood zone code buried in the fine print is not the same as actually seeing the flood area shaded on a map of the lot. We show you the map. Dark shaded areas (Zone AE or A) mean the bank will require you to buy flood insurance; lighter shading means a small chance of flooding (about 1 in 500 a year); no shading means you're in the clear. The map shows whether the house is right on the edge of a flood area or safely away from it.

Step 4 - Check what storms have hit nearby

On the Realtor tier and above, we draw tornado paths and big hail events from the last 10 years on a map around the house. This is what your insurance company looks at when they decide your home insurance rate - and it's often the surprise that hits buyers right before closing day.

Step 5 - Check the actual schools the kids would go to

Don't trust the school district name in the listing - the property line might put the kids in a completely different school. We pull the exact elementary, middle, and high school the address is zoned for, including how each school scores on tests and what AP courses they offer.

Step 6 - See how far you can drive in 15, 30, or 45 minutes

TruReport-tier buyers get a map showing everywhere you can reach in 15, 30, or 45 minutes from this house in normal traffic. This is much faster than typing two addresses into Google Maps and running it three different times for rush hour - and it shows you every place you can reach, not just the one route you thought to check.

Step 7 - Save a PDF to share with your partner or agent

TruReport-tier subscribers can save a PDF with a map of the property, all the research we gathered, and the Trust Score summary on the cover page. Send it to your spouse, your parents, or your agent so everyone is looking at the same facts when you talk about the house.
