Red flag 1 - Price 25%+ below comparable rent in the area
A "$1,400 3BR in Plano" is a scam, period. The DFW comparable spread is tight enough that anything 25% below market is fraudulent. Trust Score downweights instantly.
Red flag 2 - Listing photos pass a reverse image search
Scammers reuse photos from real for-sale listings or other rental markets. Right-click any photo, "Search Image with Google." If the same photo shows up in a 2022 Birmingham AL listing, you have a fake.
Red flag 3 - Owner-record mismatch
The listing claims "owner-managed" but Collin/Dallas/Tarrant CAD shows a different owner with a different last name. Always cross-check the deed.
Red flag 4 - Pressure to wire deposit before viewing
No legitimate Texas landlord will ask for a wire transfer before you see the unit. Wire fraud is also nearly impossible to claw back. RemotePropView Trust Score downgrades any listing whose contact email is a generic Gmail/Outlook address.
Red flag 5 - Listing language inconsistencies
Watch for "I am out of the country," "currently a missionary in Africa," "the keys are with my agent in Nigeria." These are stock phrases in fake-listing playbooks.
Red flag 6 - Address does not match a real residential address
Drop the address into Google Street View. If it is a vacant lot, a commercial building, or a different style of home than the listing photos, it is fake.
Red flag 7 - Listing posted on Facebook Marketplace, Craigslist, or random classifieds without an MLS source
Real DFW agents and PMs post to MLS-syndicated platforms. A "house for rent in Plano" posted only on Facebook with no MLS number is a high-risk listing - even if the address is real.
