Most common platforms:
- ✓Facebook Marketplace - lowest verification standards; anyone can post
- ✓Craigslist - long-standing target; "too good to be true" pricing
- ✓Apartments.com - less common but scammers duplicate real complex listings under slightly different names
- ✓Even Zillow and Realtor.com see fake rentals (though moderation catches most within days)
Verification Checklist
Before visiting or paying:
- ✓Google the apartment complex name - does an official website exist with matching contact info?
- ✓Call the complex directly using the phone number from Google Maps (not the listing)
- ✓Check if the rent matches the complex's own advertised prices (scam listings are always 20-40% cheaper)
- ✓Visit in person - real complexes have leasing offices open Mon-Sat
