DFW Tornado & Hail History by City - 10-Year Track Map

EF rating cheat sheet

Enhanced Fujita scale, what each rating means for damage:

  • EF0 (65-85 mph): minor roof damage, snapped tree limbs
  • EF1 (86-110 mph): broken windows, mobile homes flipped
  • EF2 (111-135 mph): roofs torn off frame homes, mobile homes destroyed
  • EF3 (136-165 mph): entire stories of well-built homes destroyed
  • EF4 (166-200 mph): well-built homes leveled
  • EF5 (>200 mph): strong-frame homes swept away

Notable DFW tornadoes (2015-2025)

Headline events that drove insurance rate changes across DFW:

  • Dec 2015 Garland/Rowlett EF4 - 11 fatalities, billions in damage
  • Oct 2019 North Dallas EF3 - 4-mile track through residential neighborhoods
  • Mar 2022 Round Rock-area EF3 - smaller but well-documented track south of DFW
  • Mar 2024 Ovilla/Lancaster EF2 - south of Dallas

Hail is the bigger insurance driver

DFW hail claims drive 60% of homeowner insurance payouts. Anything 1.75 inch (golf ball) or larger leaves measurable shingle damage. The 2019, 2021, and 2023 spring hail seasons were the most expensive on record. Use the storm-events overlay on the property page to see hail diameter pulses within 10 miles of any DFW address.
